george lillo , richard steele wrote trend-setting plays of augustan period. lillo s plays consciously turned heroes , kings toward shopkeepers , apprentices. emphasized drama on household scale rather national scale, , hamartia , agon in tragedies common flaws of yielding temptation , commission of christian sin. plots resolved christian forgiveness , repentance. steele s conscious lovers (1722) hinges upon young hero avoiding fighting duel. these plays set new set of values stage. instead of amusing or inspiring audience, sought instruct audience , ennoble it. further, plays popular precisely because seemed reflect audience s own lives , concerns.
