as late november 3, 39th fatality attributable earthquakes occurred perceptible aftershocks continued. on 3,000 injuries reported in niigata prefecture. on 1 hundred thousand people fled homes. earthquakes caused houses collapse in ojiya , damaged thousands in area.

japan highways closed expressways in niigata prefecture. closures affected kanetsu expressway , hokuriku expressway. of november 4, kanetsu expressway remained closed between nagaoka interchange , koide interchange. segment reopened on november 5.
landslides , other problems forced closure of 2 national highways, national route 8 , national route 17, several prefectural roads. isolated several localities, including entire village of yamakoshi, village in district of koshi since merged , became part of city of nagaoka. on july 22, 2005, government lifted nine-month-old evacuation order 528 of 690 affected households.
the earthquakes caused landslide partially buried 3 vehicles. young boy rescued 1 of these vehicles, mother , sister perished. (recent typhoons had waterlogged soil, making landslides more likely.)
the quake broke water mains. extensive electric power, telephone (including cellular telephone) , internet outages reported. cellular telephone system suffered direct damage relay stations, depletion of battery back-up power supplies in little day.
