stephen lawrence winwood born in handsworth, birmingham. father, lawrence, foundryman trade, semi-professional musician, playing saxophone , clarinet.


the young winwood became interested in swing , dixieland jazz boy, began playing piano when aged four, , started playing drums , guitar. first performed father , elder brother, muff, in ron atkinson band @ age of eight.


muff later recalled when steve began playing regularly father , brother in licensed pubs , clubs, piano had turned audience try , hide him, because underage.

winwood attended great barr school 1 of first comprehensive schools, teacher recalled him being conscientious , able student displayed ability in mathematics. attended birmingham , midland institute of music develop skills pianist, did not complete course.
