tyson joined dulwich hamlet in october 1908, having played crystal palace reserve team. first appearance on 5 november, against west ham united in london challenge cup match lost 6–0. in next match, 2 days later, tyson scored in 5–0 victory against woodford. contemporary report said of tyson: personality such inspire confidence in team .

although still registered dulwich hamlet, tyson joined southern league club southampton in may 1911, retaining amateur status. made first-team debut saints when called side replace bert lee, club captain , regular centre-half had refused play out of position, in derby match against portsmouth on 28 september 1912. in october, tyson had run of eleven matches in absence of arthur coates, before being replaced ted salway, followed few matches @ end of season.
tyson made total of 14 league appearances plus 2 in f.a. cup in saints career. southampton s club historian, duncan holley, described tyson being more robust average amateur, useful in close quarter tussles , trusted keep tight grip on opposing forwards .
international career
tyson non-playing reserve england amateur side match against belgium @ crystal palace on 4 march 1911. 3 weeks later, on 23 march, made international appearance, in 3–1 victory against france in paris, becoming dulwich hamlet s first amateur international player.
