new york central building

before electrification of new york central railroad in 1912–1913, neighborhood north of grand central terminal 1 of open-air railway yards , tracks used steam locomotives. electrification , subsequent covering of yards enabled continuation of park avenue north , construction of new buildings (with curious foundations). among them new york central building.

in 1913, new york central unveiled concept visual termination point in city. although original plan have termination point on new york central s grand central terminal, concept instead realized in form of new york central building across street north. new york central railroad company built 34-story headquarters @ 230 park ave., new york city, new york in 1929.

on september 10, 1931, capo di tutti capi salvatore maranzano murdered in ninth-floor office here hitmen sent lucky luciano , vito genovese, ambitious underlings whom maranzano had hired vincent mad dog coll kill.

the building slab-sided skyscraper between east 45th , east 46th street, distinctive design includes means of transporting park avenue street level divided aerial highway passes through building, , around grand central terminal 42nd street, , street level. top of building pyramidal, , capped ornate cupola.

interior

impressive lobby, planned corridor connecting 45th , 46th streets, echoes magnificence of exterior. design , ornamentation celebrate prowess of new york central railroad, had headquarters on premises. sense of imperial grandeur created marble walls , bronze detail, includes extensive use of railroad’s initials. chinese red elevator doors open cabs red walls, wood moldings, gift domes, , painted cloudscapes .

when new york central sold building, general tire & rubber company renamed building new york general building. building renamed c , t in central chiseled g , e respectively.

the helmsley building

when general tire & rubber company sold building helmsley-spear, leona helmsley renamed building helmsley building, current name. deal in ownership of 2,300,000 sq ft (210,000 m) building, owned helmsley-spear management until august 1998, changed hands stipulated building not renamed again. building purchased max capital $253 million, in 2006 sold again istithmar, investment firm owned royal family of dubai, $705 million. later sold goldman sachs in 2007 on $1 billion.

in may 2015, building sold $1.2 billion property firm rxr realty.
