the village known wheatenhurst, recorded in domesday book in 1086 witenhert. name means white wooded hill , or possibly wooded hill of man named hwita . name corrupted whitnester , whitmister, , 17th century evolved popular etymology whitminster. there never minster here. either or both names used of parish until 20th century, village on a38 came known whitminster, whereas smaller group of houses west of main road in centre of parish came known wheatenhurst.
the manor of wheatenhurst held beorhtric @ time of edward confessor , post-conquest held hearding in pledge beorhtric. hamlet of wheatenhurst still signposted a38 @ whitminster.
