in original test described eriksen , eriksen in 1974, letter stimuli used. subjects instructed make directional responses letters, example right response associated letters h , k, , left response s , c. each stimulus consisted of set of 7 letters, target stimulus placed in central position. examples of congruent stimuli hhhkhhh , cccsccc, both target stimulus , flankers correspond same directional response. examples of incongruent stimuli hhhshhh , ccchccc , central target letter , flankers correspond opposite directional responses. choice reaction times (crts or rts) recorded , compared between congruent , incongruent conditions.


other variants of eriksen flanker task have used numbers, color patches, or arrows stimuli. also, although eriksen flanker tasks show flankers on left , right of target, can placed above or below target, or in other spatial orientations.these examples use arbitrary mapping between stimulus , response. possibility use natural mapping, arrows stimuli. example, kopp et al. (1994) used left , right arrows, flanker stimuli above , below target. flankers arrows pointing in same direction target (congruent) opposite direction (incongruent) or squares (neutral). more commonly, flankers have been arranged in horizontal array, letter stimuli, <<<<< congruent stimulus, <<><< incongruent stimulus.
