ghana has vast array of fauna , of great significance, of ghana s fauna have attained conservation status because of current rate of decline in number , distribution. fauna of ghanaian terrestrial ecosystem, comprise diverse array of species including several of conservation concern. ghanaian records show there many 221 species of amphibians , reptiles, 724 species of birds, 225 mammalian species inhabiting ghana; 93 recorded inhabiting ghanaian savanna ecological zone. floral diversity, prime locations faunal diversity located in ghanaian high forest uplands; accounting 83% of total number of butterfly species recorded in ghana, canopy stratification , micro-climatic differentiation have provided habitats , niches specific faunal organisms.


endemism among ghanaian terrestrial fauna has been observed in 3 species of frogs; hyperolius baumanni; hyperolius fusciventris; , hyperolius sylvaticus; , lizards; , agama sylvanus found in ghanaian bia forest reserve , atwema range forest reserve. ghana has high degree of butterfly endemism more 20 species classified endemic or near-endemic. ghana home 84 known amphibian species: 78 frogs, 5 toads , caecilians. threatened species recorded in ghana include 4 species of marine turtles , 3 species of crocodiles. bird species of conservation concern include 7 threatened species, including 4 species endemic upper guinea forest block , 7 near-threatened species.


keystone species such hornbills, parrots , birds of prey (eagles) represented in ghana. of 728 birds species confirmed occurring in ghana; 408 non-passerines , 320 passerines, of 498 known or thought resident , 176 regular seasonal bird migrants, including 100 palaearctic ecozone. of total number of species occurring; 180 restricted guinea-congo forests biome , 37 restricted sudan-guinea savanna biome have been recorded in ghana. eleven of 15 endemic bird species within upper guinea forest occur in ghana. 6 of total species considered threatened , 12 near-threatened.
