after retiring acting malleson moved country, traveled , authored several books. autobiography published in 1931 followed first novel, coming in 1933. despite claiming fiction work considered roman à clef regarding relationship russell. described john g. slater thinly disguised account , novel features russell astronomer cambridge, named don gregorio del orellano, other characters acting stand ins prominent people in malleson s relationship russell, including dora russell, clifford allen, t.s. eliot , maurice elvey. malleson later disown work claiming feeble first effort.


malleson traveled extensively throughout life including visits middle east , africa, in addition frequent trips scandinavia. carried out lecture tours in scandinavia during 1930s , 1940s, speaking on social reform topics including mental health , blood supply. in 1941, while working in finland assist relief efforts in response russo-finnish war, malleson found herself stranded in remote area of country when germans took control of country fight russian forces. escaped rowing 25 miles helsinki in boat, held several days, before securing passage stockholm aboard swedish warship. time in scandinavia resulted in publication of in north: autobiographical fragments in norway, sweden, finland in 1946.
