charlton, mother welsh, born in london , attended university college, london between 1923 , 1927 studied chemistry. studied art @ slade school of art between 1930 , 1933 before taking teaching post @ west of england college of art in bristol. charlton left bristol in 1938 when appointed head of cardiff school of art. during world war two, charlton worked war artist series of short-term contracts war artists advisory committee paint industrial scenes , portraits. after war, charlton appointed hm inspector (art) wales in 1945, post held until retirement in 1966. retirement allowed charlton paint full-time , able contribute number of exhibitions, including @ royal west of england academy, new english art club , welsh arts council. charlton died in porthkerry, south glamorgan. memorial exhibition of work held @ national museum of wales in cardiff in 1985.
