1988–1990: career

morley street began racing career winning national hunt flat race @ sandown park racecourse on 5 november 1988. campaigned in novice hurdles (races horses have not won hurdle race before start of season), , won races @ sandown, newbury , ascot. in march, sent cheltenham festival contest sun alliance novices hurdle. started 5/1 second favourite , finished fourth of twenty-two runners behind sayfar s lad, trapper john , knight oil. @ aintree racecourse month later, morley street recorded first major win when defeated trapper john 1 , half lengths in mumm prize novices hurdle


in first half of 1989/1990 season, morley street ran in 3 hurdle races, winning once , finishing second in other two. victory came in leg of sport of kings challenge series, in beaten horses included leading american steeplechaser jamaica bay. @ cheltenham in march, morley street made first challenge champion hurdle. started @ odds of 10/1 in field included previous champions beech road , see then, , finished fifth of nineteen runners behind kribensis. following run in champion hurdle, jackson transferred ownership of morley street michael jackson bloodstock company. in april, returned aintree aintree hurdle on 2 , half miles , started odds-on favourite. took lead @ last hurdle , accelerated clear win fifteen lengths.


1990–1993: peak years

the 1990/1991 season intended 1 in morley street establish himself steeplechaser. warmed season having first race under flat racing rules, in recorded upset win on st leger winner michelozzo in race @ goodwood racecourse in october. in unusual move, sent across atlantic breeders cup steeplechase @ belmont park obstacles larger british hurdles, smaller british steeplechase fences. morley street won biggest prize date beat jonathan e. sheppard-trained summer colony eleven lengths. on return england, morley street won ascot hurdle 3 lengths , novices chase @ cheltenham, in beat future champion chaser deep sensation 7 lengths. morley street s five-race winning streak came end @ ascot in december when beaten remittance man in noel novices chase after repeatedly jumping left on right-handed course. despite defeat, made favourite grade feltham novices chase @ kempton, jumped poorly again , pulled after breaking blood-vessel. in february, voted american champion steeplechaser @ eclipse awards.


morley street returned hurdle racing after break , won grade ii berkshire hurdle @ newbury in march before running in second champion hurdle. started 4/1 favourite in field of twenty-four runners. frost sent morley street lead between last 2 hurdles, , gelding ran on in closing stages win 1 , half lengths nomadic way. on final start of season, morley street won second aintree hurdle, beating nomadic way 6 lengths.


in late summer of 1991, morley street briefly returned flat racing. ran poorly in lonsdale stakes @ york showed top-class staying form when finishing second short head great marquess in doncaster cup. in october, again sent united states breeders cup chase, run @ fair hill racecourse. started odds-on favourite , won 9 , 3 quarter lengths declare wish in course record time. performance enough earn him second eclipse award. morley street won second ascot hurdle in november , rested until february when ran in irish champion hurdle @ leopardstown racecourse. started odds-on favourite narrowly beaten locally trained chirkpar. started 2/1 favourite champion hurdle, younger brother granville again being 9/2 second choice in betting. morley street in contention 2 hurdles finish, failed quicken , ran sixth behind royal gait. ended season third victory in aintree hurdle, beating irish mare minorettes girl half length.


morley street won flat race @ doncaster in october, , began new national hunt season beating granville again in elite hurdle @ cheltenham in november. failed run best form when finishing second odds-on favourite in ascot hurdle , beaten in races @ cheltenham , sandown. in third champion hurdle, made no impression , finished twelfth behind granville again. in aintree hurdle, granville again made 10/11 favourite, , journalists predicted further humiliation former champion. morley street, however, returned best , defeated younger brother 1 , half lengths. win made him first horse win grade race on 4 occasions.


1993–1995: later career

after win @ aintree in april 1993, morley street never won again. return steeplechasing in late 1993 brought no success, , pulled in 1994 champion hurdle. unplaced in 4 flat races in 1994 , finished fourth when sent compete in hurdle race @ merano in italy autumn. after spending year in retirement @ owner s farm in east sussex, morley street became restless , returned training. in november 1995, showed signs of return when finishing third in ascot hurdle, retired after finishing unplaced in long walk hurdle @ ascot month later.
