the neighborhood playhouse had been founded off-broadway theatre philanthropists alice lewisohn , irene lewisohn in 1915, closed in 1927. following year, re-opened neighborhood playhouse school of theatre addition of rita wallach morgenthau. sanford meisner joined faculty in 1935 group theatre. meisner used study of russian theatre , acting innovator, konstantin stanislavski s system develop own technique, alternative lee strasberg s method acting.
the executive director emeritus of playhouse, harold g. baldridge, graduate of school himself, had been head of school 32 years. pamela moller kareman serves current executive director, graduate of neighborhood playhouse school of theatre.
the school offers 2 year certificate program, admission second year dependent upon unanimous approval of faculty. there 6 week summer intensive.
the neighborhood playhouse offers playhouse juniors, popular saturday training program children in grades 1–12. children attend fixed curriculum of singing, acting , dancing classes in non-competitive environment.
playwright horton foote met actor robert duvall @ neighborhood playhouse when duvall starred in 1957 production of foote s play, midnight caller. foote recommended duvall play part of boo radley in 1962 film, kill mockingbird.
