background

the current utv limited (originally ulster television plc), began in 1959 itv franchise holder in northern ireland, purchased isp direct net access in march 2000 £4.4m, rebranding utv internet , later utv connect. service expanded telephone market under utv talk in august 2004 , provided broadband , fibre optic packages northern ireland, republic , rest of uk. service sold rainbow communications , vodafone ireland in 2014.


the company set online car dealership utv drive, created in partnership abbey insurance, sold in 2014.


further expansion took place move radio, starting in cork 96fm , c103 in 2001. further acquisitions undertaken on next decade, largest investment being purchase of wireless group in 2005 £97m, boosting radio portfolio additional local stations, digital radio multiples , national station talksport. in 2005, group launched first station, u105, broadcasts belfast area, , purchased juice fm in liverpool .


with expansion, turnover increased, 2005 being 46% on 2004, pre-tax profits rising 12%, , employment 500 people more double figure in previous year. in 2006, total sales £113.6m of radio division accounted 54%, television 37% , 9% new media. 48% of operating profits earned in radio side of business, 47% derived television , 5% new media.


reorganisation of utv , proposed mergers

following shareholder approval, ulster television plc changed name utv plc in june 2006. then, on 16 august 2007, re-organisation of group proposed, existing utv plc, holding itv franchise only, becoming wholly owned subsidiary of new holding company, utv media plc, , remaining businesses transferred new holding company. change approved @ extraordinary general meeting on 19 september , came effect on 15 october 2007, shareholders receiving 1:1 exchange of stock old new company company, established on 1 june 2007 beechgrove trading limited, changed name utv media limited on 13 august 2007, , utv media plc on 21 august 2007.


in august , september 2006, company made 2 merger proposals stv group plc, operator of northern , central scottish itv franchises stv. latter proposal have given smg shareholders 52% of merged company. on 20 september 2006, plans abandoned after smg rejected offer unacceptable. however, on 10 january 2007, 2 companies announced had agreed merger, smg shareholders receive 46% of merged company , utv 54%. after details expected finalised before end of january, deal put on hold , called off smg on 28 february 2007.


utv ireland , further radio expansion

in january 2015, company launched utv ireland, carrying many of itv s programming including coronation street , emmerdale, had been broadcast in ireland tv3. station produces home-grown programming, including twice-nightly national news programme ireland live.


on 27 march 2015, confirmed sound digital, 30% owned company, had been successful in bid second national digital radio multiplex in uk, launched in 2016. part of bid, company expand talksport station new sister stations talksport 2 , talkradio, running relaunched virgin radio uk. multiplex launched on 29 february 2016, new stations launching on following month less talkbusiness, replaced share radio on multiplex.


sale of utv itv plc

on 19 october 2015, announced itv plc acquire utv s itv franchise , utv ireland £100 million, subject regulatory approval. utv retained radio operations, required rename after including utv brand in sale.


the sale itv plc completed on 29 february 2016, when company rebranded wireless group plc. on 30 june 2016 rupert murdoch s news corp announced agreement purchase company all-cash worth between $220-296 million. sale completed on 26 september 2016.
