the founders: stein , zacharius

walter zacharius (1923–2011) brooklyn native served in army in world war ii, taking part in d-day , liberation of paris. in 1940s , 1950s worked macfadden publications, magazines true confessions , true story. later, moved ace books, helped publisher a. a. wyn create ace double novels line of paperbacks.


after working chicago newspaper, in 1949 irwin stein returned new york, wrote comic book scripts quality comics (doll man, plastic man) , hillman periodicals before employment comic book editor st. john publications. in 1954, stein , wife helen began magazine company, royal publications, published pulp magazines our life , celebrity royal s east 44th street offices. during 1955, stein added magazines infinity science fiction , suspect detective stories (which became science fiction adventures fifth issue). during 1958-59, stein published 2 monster magazines, monster parade , monsters , things.

as various genre magazines became less common, stein decided close down royal publications , begin publishing paperback originals. , zacharius launched lancer books in june 1961 @ 26 west 47th street. larry shaw, had edited infinity science fiction , royal s monster magazines, returned editor of lancer books in 1963. shaw negotiated conan series in 1966. when shaw left in 1968, replacement editor robert hoskins. in 1970, hoskins , stein brought infinity series of paperback anthologies, labeled magazine of speculative fiction in book form.


bankruptcy , kensington books

the company filed bankruptcy in september 1973. in 1974, zacharius , roberta bender grossman co-founded kensington books (with zebra books , pinnacle books imprints following shortly). kensington known romance novels. stein continued 1990s book packager.)
