one of notable chiefs of clan graham james, marquis of montrose, poet, above all, distinguished royalist soldier of time. played massive part in civil war in scotland , grahams rallied chief. montrose had had successive victories @ battle of tippermuir - support of alaster m coll keitach (known alasdair maccolla mcdonald) , irish soldiers, battle of aberdeen, battle of inverlochy (1645), battle of auldearn, battle of alford, , battle of kilsyth. after several years of continuous victories, montrose defeated @ battle of philiphaugh on 13 september 1645 covenanter army of david leslie, lord newark, restoring power of committee of estates.


in 1646 montrose laid siege castle chanonry of ross held clan mackenzie , took them after siege of 4 days. in march 1650 captured dunbeath castle castle of clan sinclair, later support him @ carbisdale. montrose defeated @ battle of carbisdale munros, rosses, sutherlands , colonel alexander strachan. subsequently captured , executed in edinburgh in 1650.
