in late 2009, 6 flags on texas closed texas giant wooden roller coaster $10 million renovation took more year complete. idaho-firm rocky mountain construction replaced wooden track new steel i-box track, retaining wooden support structure. refurbishment success resoundingly positive reviews riders . park s parent company, 6 flags, began looking other rides in chain benefit similar overhaul.
at iaapa 2011 trade show, alan schilke of rocky mountain construction revealed company had 2 projects working on 2013 openings – 1 of i-box conversion of wooden roller coaster. later revealed spokane journal of business rattler refurbished in 2013 new track , trains in manner similar used company on new texas giant @ 6 flags on texas in 2011. although 6 flags had not publicly confirmed plans, park announced rattler close on august 5, 2012. @ end of operating day on august 5, 2012, park personnel , select enthusiasts took final ride, after which, rattler, wood coaster, ceased operation.
the national roller coaster museum , archives announced on april 16, 2013, auctioning off first ride of iron rattler on evening of may 17, 2013, , proceeds going towards museum. soft-opening held media on may 15, 2013. grand opening of iron rattler may 25, 2013.
after deadly incident on new texas giant on july 19, 2013, , because 2 rides share several similarities, 6 flags fiesta texas had ceased running iron rattler pending investigation findings sister park. in under month, iron rattler reopened on august 14 seat belts added restraint 2 trains.
