there number of instances when flooding has occurred in holme valley affecting holmfirth , other settlements in valley. earliest recorded holmfirth flood in 1738 , recent 1944. severe flood occurred on morning of 5 february 1852, when embankment of bilberry reservoir collapsed causing deaths of 81 people. following severe storm in 1777 river holme burst banks, sweeping away people , property loss of 3 lives; stone church built in 1476, swept away. storm in 1821 again caused river burst banks. flooding on night of 29 may 1944 not nationally reported , overshadowed d-day landings following week.
