chao s first production, experimental one-act play in starred. lead character spends entirety of show delivering existential monologues while lying under large piece of black cloth, until challenged otherworldly woman in white dress. chao created negative energy field part of masters thesis in performance art @ new york university s gallatin school of individualized study, premiering in 1996 @ pink, inc. in new york city, shawn sides originating role of woman in white dress. subsequently produced @ dixon place, new york international fringe festival, , elsewhere.

an absurdist comedy in experimental theater production—involving puppet show in characters abstract shapes—devolves scathing deconstruction of creator , failed romantic life when s confronted , ridiculed series of women. cats can see devil premiered in 2003 @ new york international fringe festival in production starring chao , directed john harlacher, choreography tony award nominee alex timbers. cast included krista worth (aka krista watterworth), later host of hgtv shows save bath , splurge & save. play published in 2004 edition of plays , playwrights anthology series, , monologues excerpted in several books, including best men s stage monologues of 2004. original working script cats can see devil in collection of new york public library performing arts.
