in 1872 state of rhode island appointed corliss commissioner take charge of centennial exposition @ philadelphia, , chosen 1 of executive committee appointed after preliminaries. upon great task of arranging exposition, worked usual indefatigable energy , suggestion centennial board of finance organized, body had no little insurance of financial success of exhibition.


it in own department engineer corliss contributed largely success of great fair, , supplied, after plans of other competitors proved inadequate, great fourteen hundred horsepower engine supplied power used in machinery hall.


this engine, unequaled in size @ time, installed corliss @ cost of 1 hundred thousand dollars himself , without additional expenditure exposition. great engine afterwards used operate pullman car works @ chicago until 1910, when sold scrap.
