in october 1865, following morant bay rebellion led bogle, governor eyre ordered arrest of gordon, whom suspected of planning rebellion. order of eyre, gordon transported kingston, martial law not in force, morant bay, was. within 2 days gordon tried high treason court martial, without due process of law, sentenced death, , executed on 23 october.


the execution of gordon , brutality of eyre s suppression of revolt, hundreds of jamaicans killed soldiers , more executed after trials, made affair cause célèbre in britain. john stuart mill , other liberals sought unsuccessfully have eyre (and others) prosecuted. when unable cases trial, liberals worked bring civil proceedings against eyre. forced resign office never went trial.
