jovan simmon born in subotica, of hungarian descent. son of joseph , margaret (née reves) simmon, grew in belgrade before immigrating united states in 1941, aged 16, on tourist visa join father. 1944 in united states army air forces basic training camp in wichita falls, texas. both of parents became naturalized united states citizens in 1941.
he attended harvard university earned ba, ma, , phd. student, simon hired playwright lillian hellman prepare translation of jean anouilh s lark, never paid work since hellman claimed had typed in wrong format.
simon has written theater, film, music, , book reviews publications such new york, esquire, hudson review, national review, opera news, new leader, commonweal, new criterion , new york times book review. contributes occasional essay weekly standard.
