commander john schenck serving east india squadron in june 1861 before setting sail east join west gulf blockading squadron. last mission in far east proceed paddle steamer sloop uss saginaw qui nhơn. boat filled sailors american merchant ship myrtle reported missing flag officer frederick k. engle ordered schenck search area. saginaw armed 1 50-pounder (23 kg), 1 32-pounder (15 kg) , 2 24-pound rifled guns. had complement of fifty officers , enlisted men. commander schenck arrived off qui nhơn of july 30 , prepared enter harbor following day @ 1:00 am. wanted ask vietnamese if had seen missing sailors. when saginaw entering harbor of qui nhơn on july 31, nearby fort north, mounting few guns, opened fire @ range of 600 yards.


uss saginaw s crew putting anchor down when first shot burst in water next ship. surprised, americans first raised white flag show friendly intentions second shot fired along third. trying steam, saginaw turned around , withdrew 900 yards, time crew @ station , ready action. american gunners returned fire 1 of 32-pounders , after twenty minutes vietnamese guns silenced. secondary explosion observed , suspected either powder magazine of fort, or 1 of guns, blew , killed operators. after explosion no further shots fired fort. however, saginaw s gunners continued bombardment half-hour unopposed until fort in ruins. american forces suffered no damage or casualties , after action, communicating vietnamese proved fruitless saginaw steamed hong kong.


the men of saginaw did not find missing american sailors. commander schenck went on serve distinction @ battles fort fisher during american civil war.
