After the war and today Stahleck Castle

following end of war, stahleck castle first used billet french soldiers, before returning use youth hostel in november 1947. health , welfare ministry of rhineland-palatinate opened youth leadership school @ castle in january 1948 train prospective hostel managers , staff, forced close @ end of same year because of state s poor financial situation. hostel itself, however, unaffected. in 1957 castle offered 270 beds , 60 emergency spaces , third largest youth hostel in rhineland-palatinate, after in koblenz , mainz. in terms of overnight stays, in second place 32,276.


beginning in october 1965, further building programme carried out @ castle under government superintendent of works heinrich grimm, based on plans of stahl, had died in 1957. included interior modernisation , renovation , new administration building. in addition, large terrace created on south side, , beginning in 1966 still incomplete keep built further 4 m , topped tall cone-shaped roof. ceremonial reopening took place on 20 may 1967.


the castle still used hostel, leased rhineland-palatinate youth hostel association. offers 168 beds , has approximately 42,000 overnights per year. booked up. in 1990s non-visitor facilities once more modernised @ cost of 8.3 million marks.
