spin-offs

happy days, spin-off love, american style, resulted in 7 different spin-off series, including 2 animated: laverne & shirley, blansky s beauties, mork & mindy, out of blue, joanie loves chachi, fonz , happy days gang (animated) , laverne & shirley special guest star fonz (animated).



the successful of these spin-offs, laverne & shirley (starring penny marshall , cindy williams, respectively), took place in early/mid-1960s milwaukee. shotz brewery workers, modeled after miller, schlitz, , pabst breweries once located in milwaukee, laverne , shirley find in adventures fonz, lenny , squiggy , cunninghams living in midwestern city. 2 starring characters moved los angeles in show s later years. penny marshall sister of producer garry marshall. happy days , laverne & shirley had crossover episode, shotgun wedding , in richie , fonzie trouble farmer courting daughters , laverne , shirley try them. part 1 season 7 premiere of happy days , part 2 season 5 premiere of laverne & shirley.
robin williams made first appearance mork on happy days. in own sitcom, mork & mindy, character of mork, alien planet ork, landed in 1970s boulder, colorado, study humans , took residence pam dawber s character of mindy mcconnell. originally, mork s appearance explained dream of richie s, after spin-off established, new ending tagged on repeat of happy days episode explaining mork return earth in 1978.
joanie loves chachi short-lived show richie s younger sister joanie , fonzie s younger cousin chachi s relationship during years musicians in chicago. while commonly believed show canceled due low ratings, program finished in top 20 first season, abc determined show losing of lead-in, suggesting low appeal if show moved (a suggestion came realized, show s ratings dropped dramatically after move time slot in second season). type of cancellation seemed strange in 1980s, became commonplace part of tv audience research.
out of blue spin-off of happy days, though scheduling error had series airing prior main character s introduction on happy days.
blansky s beauties (1977) starred nancy walker former las vegas showgirl nancy blansky. 1 week before show s premiere, blansky character appeared on happy days cousin of howard cunningham. scott baio , lynda goodfriend co-starred before joining happy days following fall, , pat morita reprised role of arnold. similarly, eddie mekka of laverne & shirley played cousin of carmine character, while pulling double duty regular in both shows.

spinoff pilots did not succeed include ralph , potsie show pinky tuscadero show .

a series of novels based on characters , dialog of series written william johnston , published tempo books in 1970s.


animation

there 2 animated series. both produced hanna-barbera productions in association paramount television (now known cbs television distribution). fonz , happy days gang ran 1980 1982. there animated spin-offs of laverne & shirley (laverne & shirley in army) , mork , mindy (centering on young mork , mindy in high school). following season, connected mork & mindy/laverne & shirley/fonz hour (1982).


musicals

in late 1990s, touring arena show called happy days, arena spectacular toured australia s major cities. story featured property developer, , former girlfriend of fonzie called miss frost (rebecca gibney) wanting buy diner , redevelop it. starred craig mclachlan fonzie, max gillies , wendy hughes mr. , mrs. cunningham, doug parkinson al , jo beth taylor richie s love interest laura. tom bosley presented introduction before each performance live on stage, , pop group human nature played 1950s-style rock group.


another stage show, happy days: new musical began touring in 2008.


reunions

there have been 2 reunion shows aired on abc: first happy days reunion special, aired in march 1992, followed second special in 2004 commemorate program s 30th anniversary. both set in interview/clip format.
