after israel withdrew gaza in 2005, hamas , other militants unleashed barrage of daily rocket attacks israel. city of sderot, example, 1 mile away gaza, hit on 360 qassam rockets within six-month period after israel s withdrawal. in june 2006, militants gaza tunneled israel, killing 2 soldiers , capturing one. 2 weeks later, hezbollah, supported iran , syria, attacked israel across internationally recognized israeli–lebanese border, killing 8 soldiers , kidnapping two, simultaneously launching barrage of rockets against civilian towns in northern israel. israel responded military operation lasted 34 days. after hamas fired thousands of rockets @ israeli communities , refused renew six-month truce, israel responded military operation against hamas protect israeli citizens. 22-day operation ended on january 18, 2009. in may 2010, turkish activists free gaza flotilla tried break israel’s naval blockade of hamas-controlled gaza. in august 2010, lebanese soldiers shot , killed israeli soldier during routine idf maintenance on border. 3 lebanese soldiers , 1 lebanese journalist killed in exchange of gunfire.
