prior december 2010 subpoena relating wikileaks, twitter had received @ least 1 subpoena information users. after attorney-general of state of pennsylvania tom corbett elected governor of pennsylvania, revealed had issued subpoena against twitter demand personal information on 2 users criticised him. sub-poena included phone numbers, email addresses, banking info, , internet accounts. ordered twitter produce information without informing users. philadelphia inquirer claimed subpoena issued because of 2 users criticisms of corbett. corbett s spokesperson said subpoena issued part of ongoing criminal investigation . organizations public citizen , american civil liberties union (aclu) provided legal aid users. subpoena later dropped attorney-general s office. on 11 march, u.s. judge upheld request of federal prosecutor.

on 14 december 2010 u.s. department of justice issued subpoena directing twitter provide information in accordance usc 18 2703(d). order additionally directed twitter should not disclose existence of subpoena without prior authorization. julian assange, chelsea manning, rop gonggrijp, jacob appelbaum , birgitta jonsdottir named in subpoena. requested information included user names, addresses, telephone numbers, bank account details, , credit card numbers.
