hugh of chacombe, lord of manor of chacombe, founded augustinian chacombe priory in reign of henry ii (1154–89). west of present village.


in 1536 priory suppressed in dissolution of monasteries , surrendered properties crown. today visible remains of priory small chapel apparently built in 13th century , set of mediaeval fishponds. however, @ least 3 medieval stone coffin slabs, including 1 13th century, have been found in priory grounds.


part of priory site occupied house, called chacombe priory. house has large elizabethan porch , late 17th-century staircase, , remodelled in georgian era.
