on april 5, 1968, in chicago, violence sparked on west side of city, , gradually expanded consume 28-block stretch of west madison street, additional damage occurring on roosevelt road. lawndale , austin neighborhoods on west side , woodlawn neighborhood on south side experienced majority of destruction , chaos. rioters broke windows, looted stores, , set buildings (both abandoned , occupied) on fire. firefighters flooded neighborhood, , chicago s off-duty firefighters told report duty. there 36 major fires reported between 4:00 pm , 10:00 pm alone. next day, mayor richard j. daley imposed curfew on under age of 21, closed streets automobile traffic, , halted sale of guns or ammunition.


approximately 10,500 police sent in, , april 6, more 6,700 illinois national guard troops had arrived in chicago 5,000 regular army soldiers 1st armored , 5th infantry divisions being ordered city president johnson. general in charge declared no 1 allowed have gatherings in riot areas, , authorized use of tear gas. mayor richard j. daley gave police authority shoot kill arsonist or molotov cocktail in hand ... , ... shoot maim or cripple looting stores in our city.


by time order restored on april 7, 11 people had died, 500 had been injured, , 2,150 had been arrested. on 200 buildings damaged in disturbance damage costs running $10 million.


the south side ghetto had escaped major chaos because 2 large street gangs, blackstone rangers , east side disciples, cooperated control neighborhoods. many gang members did not participate in rioting, due in part king s direct involvement these groups in 1966.
