1216–1542

the principality of wales existed between 1216 , 1536, encompassing two-thirds of modern wales during height between 1267 , 1277. of history annexed , united english crown. however, few generations, period foundation in 1216 edward s completion of conquest of wales in 1284, de facto independent under welsh prince of wales, albeit 1 swore fealty king of england.

from 1689 1948 there no differentiation between government of england , government in wales. laws relating england included wales , wales considered british government indivisible part of england within united kingdom. first piece of legislation relate wales sunday closing (wales) act 1881. further exception welsh church act 1914, disestablished church in wales (which had formerly been part of church of england) in 1920.


in 1948 practice established laws passed in parliament of united kingdom designated applicable either england , wales or scotland , returning legal identity wales had not existed hundreds of years following act of union scotland in 1707. in 1948 new council wales established parliamentary committee. in 1964 welsh office established, based in london, oversee , recommend improvements application of laws in wales. situation continue until devolution of government in wales , establishment of autonomous national assembly wales in 1998.
