as seen northern hemisphere, constellation s brighter stars form recognizable asterism known teapot . stars δ sgr (kaus media), ε sgr (kaus australis), ζ sgr (ascella), , φ sgr form body of pot; λ sgr (kaus borealis) point of lid; γ sgr (alnasl) tip of spout; , σ sgr (nunki) , τ sgr handle. these same stars formed bow , arrow of sagittarius.


marking bottom of teapot s handle (or shoulder area of archer, bright star (2.59 magnitude) zeta sagittarii (ζ sgr), named ascella, , fainter tau sagittarii (τ sgr).


to complete teapot metaphor, under conditions, particularly dense area of milky way can seen rising in north-westerly arc above spout, puff of steam rising boiling kettle.


the constellation whole depicted having rough appearance of stick-figure archer drawing bow, fainter stars providing outline of horse s body. sagittarius famously points arrow @ heart of scorpius, represented reddish star antares, 2 constellations race around sky. following direct line formed delta sagittarii (δ sgr) , gamma2 sagittarii (γ sgr) leads directly antares. fittingly, sagittarii alnasl, arabic word arrowhead , , delta sagittarii called kaus media, center of bow, arrow protrudes. kaus media bisects lambda sagittarii (λ sgr) , epsilon sagittarii (ε sgr), names kaus borealis , kaus australis refer northern , southern portions of bow, respectively.
