manga

written , illustrated naoki urasawa, monster published in big comic original december 1994 december 2001. 162 chapters periodically collected 18 tankōbon volumes published shogakukan, first on 30 june 1995 , last on 28 february 2002. while writing monster, urasawa began series 20th century boys in 1999, continue after monster had finished. monster received nine-volume kanzenban re-release between january 30 , august 29, 2008.


monster licensed in north america viz media, published 18 volumes between 21 february 2006 , 16 december 2008. released kanzenban version of series, titled monster: perfect edition, between july 15, 2014 , july 19, 2016. series has received domestic releases in other countries, such in germany egmont manga & anime, in france , netherlands kana, in spain planeta deagostini, in brazil conrad editora , later panini brasil, in argentina larp editores, in taiwan tong li publishing, , in mexico grupo editorial vid.

the manga series adapted anime madhouse, aired between 7 april 2004 , 28 september 2005 on nippon tv. directed masayuki kojima , written tatsuhiko urahata, features original character designs long-time studio ghibli animator kitarō kōsaka adapted anime shigeru fujita.


the anime includes instrumental theme chilean folk music group quilapayún, transiente , appeared on 1984 album tralalí tralalá. david sylvian commissioned write ending theme, love of life , on collaborated haishima kuniaki. in cover notes official soundtrack said, attracted monster material moral dilemma faced central character. calm surface of music giving way darker undercurrents, signifying conscience of lead protagonist , themes of morality, fate, resignation, , free will.


an english dub of monster produced salami studios viz media, had north american license anime. show aired on syfy s ani-mondays 2 episodes back-to-back each monday night @ 11:00 pm est, beginning 12 october 2009, on sister network chiller. dvd box set of series, containing first 15 episodes released 8 december 2009. however, due low sales of first box set, viz decided not continue releasing remaining episodes on dvd , later dropped license. monster began airing on canada s super channel on 15 march 2010, , on funimation channel on 3 april 2010 on weekends @ 12:30 am. series available digitally several internet retailers. siren visual licensed series australia in 2013, , released in 5 dvd volumes beginning in november 2013.


live-action adaptations

new line cinema acquired rights american live-action film adaptation of monster. academy award-nominated screenwriter josh olson (a history of violence) hired write screenplay. although studio announced 2009 release, project apparently fell production limbo.


in 2013, revealed guillermo del toro , american premium television network hbo collaborating on pilot live-action tv series based on monster. co-executive producer stephen thompson (doctor , sherlock) writing pilot, while del toro direct , executive producer alongside don murphy , susan montford. in 2015, del toro told latino-review hbo had passed on project , in process of pitching other studios.
