the red pier allowed passengers disembark steamer more readily @ high tide, until 1871, passengers had board rowing boats in order ferried vessel lying off. reverse applied when disembarking. scene chaotic, , quite in winter, passengers reach red pier vessel soaking wet , exhausted.


owing openness swell generated easterly winds, there many shipwrecks in douglas bay , surrounding area. culminated in heroic rescue of crew of ss st. george sir william hillary , crew of douglas lifeboat on 20 november 1830.
