the mechanism of fujiwara–moritani reaction not understood. accepted mechanism shown in figure 1. sequence begins formation of palladium–aryl cationic complex via friedel-crafts or concerted deprotonation metallation process eliminates acetic acid generate palladium–aryl species. olefin coordinates palladium , undergoes 1,2-migratory insertion, forming c-c bond. following β-hydride elimination yields styrene type product , palladium hydride species. deprotonation of palladium(ii) species yields palladium(0) in presence of oxidant, can reoxidized palladium(ii) , undergo catalytic cycle once more.
