on outbreak of civil war serving colonel of 16th u.s. infantry. appointed brigadier general in may 1861, , commanded 1st brigade, 2nd division @ first battle of bull run. served provost marshal of district of columbia, , appointed provost marshal general of army of potomac in peninsula campaign. in april 1864 mustered out health reasons.
