charlie , chocolate factory scheduled begin previews on 17 may 2013, @ theatre royal, drury lane, london, before holding official opening night on 25 june 2013. show due open @ london palladium. douglas hodge cast in lead role of willy wonka, further casting announced on 11 january 2013. previews of show delayed 5 days until 22 may, due unforeseen problems in delivery of piece of stage engineering contractor . shortly after opening night booking period show extended until may 2014, further extension november 2014, after approximately 300,000 people having attended show october 2013. production booking had been further extended till 3 december 2016. show holds record highest weekly gross in west end, grossing £1,080,260 during week commencing 30 december 2013. first major cast change took place in may 2014, when alex jennings replaced hodge wonka. in may 2015 second cast change took place, jonathan slinger wonka.


on 23 february 2016, booking once again extended through january 2017.


the west end production closed @ theatre royal, drury lane on 7 january 2017, after running 1293 days @ theatre.


broadway (2017)

a reworked version of show opened on broadway in spring 2017 changes including new direction jack o brien, choreography josh bergasse , new set design original designer mark thompson. mendes stays producer only. o brien stated score pay homage leslie bricusse/anthony newley songs written 1971 film , feature songs written shaiman , wittman. in august 2016, o brien confirmed candy man , pure imagination included in musical.


on 9 may 2016 announced show open @ lunt-fontanne theatre starring christian borle willy wonka. previews began on 28 march 2017 , opening night occurred on 23 april 2017. reviews of production mixed negative, critics citing poor staging , restructuring of story primary issues. broadway production notably darker original production, 4 rotten golden ticket winners meeting grisly demises in second act.


for production, characters of augustus gloop, violet beauregarde, veruca salt , mike teavee played adult actors, unlike child actors in london production, while character of charlie remains played child actors.


on november 15, 2017, announced production close on january 14, 2018 after playing 27 previews , 305 performances.
