following release of solo album mccartney ii, wings regrouped in july , october 1980 rehearse several songs later appeared on tug of war , pipes of peace. feeling need direction, mccartney called upon old producer, george martin, begin recording song written animated rupert bear character (to mccartney owned rights), entitled stand , among others. productive sessions continued until 9 december, morning mccartney woke discover old songwriting partner , fellow ex-beatle, john lennon, had been shot , killed night before in new york city. abandoning day s session part-way through (where , denny laine recording future b-side rainclouds ), both martin , mccartney felt best leave project time being , start anew once ready.


in february 1981, 2 months after lennon s death, paul mccartney resumed sessions, recording month stevie wonder, stanley clarke, carl perkins , ringo starr , laying down several songs in process.


the recordings held @ air studios in montserrat, in caribbean , lasted 3 february 2 march, ending ebony , ivory , s re doing, 2 songs featuring stevie wonder. 10cc guitarist eric stewart became frequent collaborator of mccartney s during era. further sessions summer undertaken @ george martin s air studios @ oxford street, london – producer manning controls , giving mccartney s music benefit of 1980s technology. sessions productive several of tracks held on next album, pipes of peace, followed in 1983. rest of 1981 spent in quiet fashion, mccartney , martin touching album , perfecting it.
