technology

the road database vector map. street names or numbers , house numbers, points of interest (waypoints), encoded geographic coordinates. enables users find desired destination street address or geographic coordinates. (see map database management.)

map database formats uniformly proprietary, no industry standards satellite navigation maps, although companies trying address sdal , navigation data standard (nds). map data vendors such tele atlas , navteq create base map in gdf (geographic data files) format, each electronics manufacturer compiles in optimized, proprietary manner. gdf not cd standard car navigation systems. gdf used , converted onto cd-rom in internal format of navigation system. cdf (carin database format) proprietary navigation map format created philips.

sdal proprietary map format developed navteq, released royalty free in hope become industry standard digital navigation maps, has not been adopted industry. vendors used format include:

microsoft
magellan
pioneer
panasonic
clarion
infogation

navigation data standard (nds)

the navigation data standard (nds) initiative, industry grouping of car manufacturers, navigation system suppliers , map data suppliers objective standardization of data format used in car navigation systems, allow map update capability. nds effort began in 2004 , became registered association in 2009. standardization improve interoperability, allowing same navigation maps used in navigation systems 20 manufacturers. companies involved include bmw, volkswagen, daimler, renault, adit, aisin aw, alpine electronics, navigon, navis-ams, bosch, denso, mitsubishi, harman international industries, panasonic, preh car connect formerly technisat, ptv, continental ag, clarion, navteq, navinfo, tomtom , zenrin.

media

the road database may stored in solid state read-only memory (rom), optical media (cd or dvd), solid state flash memory, magnetic media (hard disk), or combination. common scheme have base map permanently stored in rom can augmented detailed information region user interested in. rom programmed @ factory; other media may preprogrammed, downloaded cd or dvd via computer or wireless connection (bluetooth, wi-fi), or directly used utilizing card reader.

some navigation device makers provide free map updates customers. these updates obtained vendor s website, accessed connecting navigation device pc.

real-time data

some systems can receive , display information on traffic congestion using either tmc, rds, or gprs/3g data transmission via mobile phones.

integration , other functions

the color lcd screens on automotive navigation systems can used display television broadcasts or dvd movies.
a few systems integrate (or communicate) mobile phones hands-free talking , sms messaging (i.e., using bluetooth or wi-fi).
automotive navigation systems can include personal information management meetings, can combined traffic , public transport information system.

original factory equipment

many vehicle manufacturers offer gps navigation device option in vehicles. customers vehicles did not ship gps can therefore purchase , retrofit original factory-supplied gps unit. in cases can straightforward plug-and-play installation if required wiring harness present in vehicle. however, manufacturers, new wiring required, making installation more complex.

the primary benefit of approach integrated , factory-standard installation. many original systems contain gyrocompass and/or accelerometer , may accept input vehicle s speed sensors , reverse gear engagement signal output, thereby allowing them navigate via dead reckoning when gps signal temporarily unavailable. however, costs can considerably higher other options.

sms

establishing points of interest in real-time , transmitting them via gsm cellular telephone networks using short message service (sms) referred gps2sms. vehicles , vessels equipped hardware able automatically send sms text message when particular event happens, such theft, anchor drift or breakdown. receiving party (e.g., tow truck) can store waypoint in computer system, draw map indicating location, or see in automotive navigation system.
