mag-11 aircraft @ sheik isa air base, bahrain, in 1991.


in august 1990, mag-11 began providing squadrons mag-70 air combat element (ace) of 7th marine expeditionary brigade (7th meb) deployment middle east part of operation desert shield. establishment of mef , 3rd maw in theater on 3 september 1990, mag-11 transferred mcas el toro bahrain , assumed operational control of usmc f/a-18a/c/d, a-6e, ea-6b, , kc-130f/r/t aircraft in southwest asia. prior commencement of hostilities, mag-11 grew become largest marine fixed wing air group in history squadrons 4 marine aircraft wings. order execute operation desert storm received , extensive combat operations commenced. initial strikes flown deep iraq follow on operations designed prepare battlefield attack marine ground forces. when ground war began, mag-11 flew on 7,500 combat sorties , 16,400 hours, without loss of life or aircraft. 13 squadrons expended on 17 million pounds of ordnance during combat operations.
