art feeds food drive

conscious alliance uses art incentive inspire people donate our cause. concertgoers participate in organization s ‘art feeds’ food drives receive limited edition concert poster making suggested donation of 20 or more non-perishable food items, or recommended monetary donation. artist, retains creative control on image, donates art conscious alliance uses poster, while organization covers printing costs. of collected food donations locally distributed feeding america food bank affiliates in town or city in event takes place. since organization s inception in 2002, conscious alliance has collected , distributed on 1.5 million pounds of food communities in need across united states. money raised used purchase , deliver food in large bulk quantities native american reservations across united states.


annual holiday meal delivery

this thanksgiving season conscious alliance hosting 9th annual holiday meal delivery, taking place november 15–18, 2012. goal distribute on 10,000 meals local families in need in greater denver area, households on pine ridge indian reservation in south dakota , northern cheyenne indian reservation in montana, among poorest communities in united states.


many people unaware of conditions on these reservations. unemployment rate consistently on 80% on pine ridge indian reservation, due extreme economic isolation of reservation. food insecurity rampant. climate extreme in region of country, regular winter blizzards , temperatures annually falling -20 °f or lower. in winter, people make real choice between buying food , buying fuel heat homes.


conscious alliance strives alleviate immediate need basic necessities of life, while simultaneously teaming community leaders create possibilities future. organization provides food reservations, working these leaders inspire members of community, particular focus on positive youth outreach programs empower next generation.


art feeds youth workshops

conscious alliance initiating series of art workshops native , non-native youth, beginning in boulder/denver area. youth spend day working special artist, part of conscious alliance community , has donated artwork ‘art feeds’ program. each workshop directed different artist, work youth inspire creativity through power of guidance , collaboration.


the youth spend day exploring imagination , producing own unique artwork under guidance of these artists. collaborate fellow youth in program. youth movement use art vehicle can used engage younger generation in activities increase self-esteem , inspire use of talents , aspirations.


many of youth involved in workshops experience high levels of adolescent risk factors, including extreme economic deprivation. these art workshops designed have tremendous impact on youth , reduce effects of these risk factors. not can such programs enhance young peoples’ attitudes , futures, programs provide opportunities youth learn new skills , encourages them engage in arts. of our supporters, cultivate collective movement inspire confidence, creativity, hope, , ambition youth of native , non-native communities.


sustainable housing initiative

conscious alliance proud support new sustainable housing project on pine ridge indian reservation partnering university of colorado , native american sustainable housing initiative (nashi), nonprofit design-build program seeking improve housing conditions on tribal lands through research, education, , outreach activities. cu environmental design students teaming students oglala lakota college (olc) on pine ridge studying construction technology offer project called ‘designing people , place: sustainable & affordable housing pine ridge indian reservation.


many of houses on reservation substandard, lacking electricity , working sewage systems, plagued mold, , small house extended families. students cu , olc designing , building energy-efficient homes affordable , meet cultural needs of on reservation.


the project address need environmentally sound , economical housing, , increase capacity, knowledge, , resources of olc students build sustainable , energy efficient homes suitable community members on pine ridge. project give lakota students @ olc chance acquire necessary skills foster future economic development opportunities in sustainable housing development , construction.


ft. robinson run

every january, conscious alliance sponsors fort robinson outbreak spiritual run, 400-mile journey fort robinson, nebraska busby, montana. coordinated phillip whiteman jr. , lynette 2 bulls home in lame deer, montana, run created pay homage northern cheyenne ancestors broke out of fort robinson on january 9, 1879. of them killed @ time, few survived , made homeland, powder river country in southeastern montana. because of sacrifice, have northern cheyenne indian reservation.


the runners include 100 northern cheyenne youth reservation range in age 7 young adults. many of participants considered “at risk” youth , come disadvantaged backgrounds. runners make commitment undertake five-day journey across 400 miles commemorates ancestry replicating epic journey nebraska homeland in montana. run day , night enduring january temperatures , physical hardships, ancestors of 130 years ago. learn valuable lessons of unity, responsibility self , others, , how overcome adversities. encourage 1 through winter weather, sand-hills of nebraska, sacred black hills of south dakota, , plains , mountains of montana. gain strong connection sacrifice of ancestors. run instills in them sense of pride, greater self-esteem, deeper respect identity , sincere appreciation homeland.
