disturbances erupted in pittsburgh on april 5 , continued through april 11. riot peaked on april 7 in 1 person killed , 3,600 national guardsmen deployed city. on 100 businesses either looted or burned in hill district, homewood, , north side neighborhoods various structures being set afire arsonists. riot left many of city s black commercial districts in shambles , areas impacted unrest slow recover in following decades.
