after that, travelled again, spain , belgium and, when returned in 1862, received gold medal along stipend allowed him continue studies abroad.


he spent 4 years in paris , rome, painted portraits of catholic clergy, scenes folk life, , interiors of church buildings , synagogues. in 1866, showed 8 of these paintings in saint petersburg, earning title of academician , extension of stipend. 2 years later, showed more works , named professor.


when stipend expired, chose stay in rome, continued exhibit in saint petersburg. helped acquire paintings tretyakov gallery , collector, bogdan khanenko. point on, works dealt exclusively catholic church; plus portraits of young women. paintings notable attention details in environment , costume, considered sentimental. non-catholic commentators in russia concerned lack of critical detachment .

an extremely harsh article appeared in june, 1901 edition of Мир искусства (world of art) calling him worst of modern artists , disgrace russian art, , suggesting of works thrown away; attack related subject matter , loyalties, rather artistic quality. after that, , similar follow-up criticisms, fell depression , committed suicide following year.


in 1990, 1 of paintings, italian shop , among dozen stolen serpukhov historical , art museum. recovered in 2010, after being found in private collection.
