the .hack games set in alternate timeline of earth, in year 2010. after computer virus called pluto s kiss crashes every computer in world, access internet closed general public address security concerns. after 2 years without internet , online games, mmorpg called world released. becomes popular online game of time on 20 million unique players. shortly before events portrayed in .hack games, number of users become comatose result of playing world. however, developers blame condition on cyberterrorism.


the world developed german programmer named harald hoerwick; backstory based on epitaph of twilight, epic poem emma wielant. death inspired hoerwick create game. elements of poem coded game s programming. hidden purpose of hoerwick s game develop ultimate artificial intelligence (ai), capable of making decisions itself. end, hoerwick inserted functions system monitor , extract behavioral data millions of game s players aid in ai s learning process. after hoerwick s death, these pieces of code became black boxes current developers, cannot fathom purpose, yet critical proper functioning of game.

in .hack//infection, kite s friend orca invites him play world. in first dungeon visit, encounter girl in white, aura, being chased humanoid monster. aura tries entrust orca item called book of twilight , monster attacks him, crashing world s servers. kite s player discovers yasuhiko, orca s player, has fallen comatose after attack, , resolves discover cause. kite meets blackrose, takes him cathedral attacked headless swordsman. legendary player balmung appears , defeats it, monster revives data bug. book of twilight activates, altering kite s character data , giving him twilight bracelet. uses data drain correct swordsman s code, allowing balmung kill it. balmung accuses kite of causing viral infection spreading through game, , leaves. kite , blackrose decide cooperate coma victims. after investigating number of leads, kite , blackrose track down skeith, creature put orca coma. defeat skeith, transforms larger enemy called cubia, escape.

in .hack//outbreak, balmung realizes cannot end situation on own, , joins kite s quest. blackrose tells kite brother became comatose under similar circumstances orca, renews both characters determination. wiseman formulates plan combat cursed wave, enlisting helba s assistance. teamwork destroys wave monster fidchell, aftermath causes networks in real world malfunction. aura contacts kite again, meeting cut short cubia s reappearance. lios, observing cubia s power, agrees join kite, helba, , others combat cursed wave. in resulting operation, team pools resources defeat wave monster called gorre, no repercussions in real world.


.hack//quarantine sees current server becoming increasingly unstable. fix problem, helba replaces copy of net slum. @ bottom of dungeon, kite encounters mia, member of party. discovers mia cursed wave monster named macha, whom reluctantly defeats. meanwhile, cubia grows stronger, , kite s team barely fends off latest attack. in contrast, operation orca success destroy tarvos, next wave monster. kite seeks advice of harald hoerwick, creator of game survives beyond death through ai incarnations. aura appears , hints cubia shadow of kite s twilight bracelet. cubia ambushes them , destroys ai harald. in final battle, kite recalls aura s hint , has blackrose destroy bracelet, causing cubia fade away. without bracelet, final wave member, corbenik, ambushes party in net slum root town. aid of spirits of coma victims, kite penetrates corbenik s barrier. aura sacrifices herself end battle, restoring network normal , reviving coma victims.
