significance

the nagzira wildlife sanctuary miraculously preserved green oasis in easternmost part of maharashtra state , has great importance bio-diversity conservation point of view. sanctuary locked in arms of nature , adorned picturesque landscapes, luxuriant vegetation , serves living outdoor museum explore , appreciate nature. wildlife sanctuary indeed nature’s priceless asset , beckons 1 , enjoy picturesque landscape, scenic beauty, pure , fresh air. boon , hence must realise real worth of marvelous treasure house of nature , must protect part of our national heritage. has got immense potentials bio-diversity conservation point of view , values discussed below.


ecological or environmental values

it important conservation unit in central india in general , vidarbha in particular. acts green-lung adjoining human settlements , helps in maintaining environmental balance.


zoological values

it home of many endangered species. vertebrate fauna includes, besides number of fishes, 34 species of mammals, 166 species of birds including migratory land , water birds, 36 species of reptiles , 4 species of amphibia. sanctuary notable wealth of birds , indeed bird watcher’s paradise. zoological values of sanctuary briefly given below.


invertebrates

this sanctuary abode of, besides innumerable other insects , ants species, 49 butterfly species belonging 9 families, important species among them common rose, common mormon, lime butterfly, common sailor, common indian crow, black rajah etc.


mammals

nearly 34 – species of mammal belonging 8 natural orders , 16 families seen in sanctuary, out of 14 species of endangered status, namely tiger, leapord, jungle cat, small indian civet, palm civet, wolf, jackal, sloth bear, ratel, common giant flying squirrel, gaur, 4 horned antelope, mouse deer, pangolin.


birds

the avifauna of sanctuary attractive wildlife feature. on 166 species belonging 16 different orders , 47 families have been recorded here. many 15 species of migratory birds , 42 species of local migrants reported. 1 remarkable bird, bar-headed goose winter migrant ladakh , tibet inhabits chorkhamara tank located adjoining sanctuary. there 13 bird species of endangered status including peafowl , birds belonging accipitridae family.


reptiles

this sanctuary abode of 36 species of reptiles belonging 2 natural orders , 11 families out of 6 species of endangered status namely indian rock python, dhaman, indian cobra, russel’s viper, checkered keelback , common monitor.


amphibia

this sanctuary home of many interesting varieties of frogs , toads tree-frog, bull-frog, six-toed frog, uncommon toad; ramanella montana etc.


fishes

the nagzira lake , other water-bodies in , around sanctuary abound in many varieties of fresh water fishes.
