Structure Biceps
location of biceps. 2 different colors represent 2 different bundles compose biceps.
the biceps muscle in upper arm 2 heads, called short head , long head, converge single mass. 1 of 3 muscles in anterior compartment of arm, others being brachialis muscle , coracobrachialis muscle, biceps shares nerve supply. both heads of biceps arise scapula in shoulder, , muscle attaches radius (bone), in forearm. specifically, short head of biceps originates coracoid process @ top of scapula. long head originates supraglenoid tubercle above shoulder joint. here, long head has tendon passes along intertubercular groove of humerus joint capsule of shoulder joint. tendon of short head runs adjacent tendon of coracobrachialis , likewise attaches coracoid process.
both heads join on middle of humerus, form single muscle mass near insertion of deltoid, form common muscle belly. distally, biceps ends in 2 tendons: stronger attaches radial tuberosity on radius, while other, bicipital aponeurosis, radiates ulnar part of antebrachial fascia.
the tendon attaches radial tuberosity partially or surrounded bursa; bicipitoradial bursa, ensures frictionless motion between biceps tendon , proximal radius during pronation , supination of forearm.
two muscles lie underneath biceps brachii. these coracobrachialis muscle, biceps attaches coracoid process of scapula, , brachialis muscle connects ulna , along mid-shaft of humerus. besides those, brachioradialis muscle adjacent biceps , inserts on radius bone, though more distally.
variation
traditionally described two-headed muscle, biceps brachii 1 of variable muscles of human body , has third head arising humerus in 10% of cases (normal variation) — commonly originating near insertion of coracobrachialis , joining short head — four, five, , 7 supernumerary heads have been reported in rare cases.
the distal biceps tendons separated in 40% , bifurcated in 25% of cases.
nerve supply
the biceps shares nerve supply other 2 muscles of anterior compartment. muscles supplied musculocutaneous nerve. fibers of fifth, sixth , seventh cervical nerves make components of musculocutaneous nerve supply biceps.
