the governor in la imperial when news arrived mapuches had renewed attacks against angol. in order reinforce point, set out 50 men on december 21, 1598. on second day of march arrived @ place called curallaba or curalava (the broken rock), on banks of lumaco river, rested without taking precautions against attack. on nights of 23rd , 24th natives approached camp, , shouts , sounds of horns attacked spanish.


oñez de loyola , pair of soldiers @ side fought valiantly, succumbed spears of natives. in melee spaniards died, save cleric named bartolomé pérez, taken prisoner, , soldier named bernardo de pereda, received 23 wounds on body , left dead improbably survived.


the mapuches initiated general uprising destroyed cities in homeland south of biobío river. kept head of oñez de loyola, giving years later governor alonso garcía de ramón.
