high school

after graduating florida state in 1968, reese accepted first full-time position head coach of men s , women s swim teams @ bolles school in jacksonville, florida, coached amateur athletic union (aau) team j.e.t.s. 1969 1971. in 1971, bolles rival prep school, episcopal high school, enticed reese become head coach of men s , women s swimming , diving teams. under reese, episcopal men s team won high school national championship title.

when university of florida s long-time head coach, bill harlan, retired in 1976, florida athletic director ray graves named reese new head coach of both gators men s , women s swimming , diving teams. on following fourteen seasons, reese s gators men s team posted dual meet record of 100–21 (.826), , gators women s team compiled record of 118–7 (.944), both among best in ncaa swimming history. gators men s , women s teams each won 2 national university championship team titles; women in 1979 , 1982, , men in 1983 , 1984. women swimmers won seventy-six aiaw , ncaa individual titles. seventy-nine of gators women garnered more 500 all-american honors , sixty of gators men earned more 200 all-american honors. ncaa women s coach of year in 1982 , 1988, , ncaa men s coach of year in 1984 , 1985. reese earned total of ten sec coach of year awards—seven men s team in 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 , 1990 , 3 women s team in 1987, 1988 , 1990.



reese developed reputation innovative theories on training , nutrition, many of used top american coaches. on years, employed such unusual training methods having florida gators swimmers swim upstream in nearby ichetucknee river, training workouts clothed, crawl way entrance ramp of ben hill griffin stadium on hands wheels attached ankles, , swim waist belt attached pulley , weights. reese s creative ideas included invention of special arm paddles create water resistance while correcting motion of swimmer s strokes.


after fourteen seasons head coach of florida gators swimming , diving teams, reese resigned in 1990—first announcing relinquish helm of women s team in january, , control of men s team in april.

reese selected assistant u.s. coach 1980 moscow olympics, 1984 los angeles olympics , 1988 seoul olympics, 1979 pan american games , 1987 pan pacific games.


his u.s. swimming team, florida aquatic swim team (fast) , holmes lumber aquatic swim team among best in united states club history , collectively won fourteen national team championships. reese s individual swimmers set sixteen world records, including 5 world records tracy caulkins, 4 rowdy gaines, 2 each of martin lópez-zubero, craig beardsley , dara torres, , 1 duncan armstrong.


reese retired full-time coaching in 1990 , accepted position regional president of teamstaff companies, inc., directed , trained leasing , sales brokers. in 1996, started own company, peak mortgage company, principal , chief executive officer. reese s retirement coaching did not last long, , later became head coach @ circle c ranch swim team—which later merged texas aquatics form longhorn aquatics, co-coached brother eddie. reese has authored several swimming journal articles, co-authored book scientific approach sport of swimming john troup, , published second book building championship season randy reese. director of aquatics clearwater aquatics team in clearwater, florida.
