after graduating florida state in 1968, reese accepted first full-time position head coach of men s , women s swim teams @ bolles school in jacksonville, florida, coached amateur athletic union (aau) team j.e.t.s. 1969 1971. in 1971, bolles rival prep school, episcopal high school, enticed reese become head coach of men s , women s swimming , diving teams. under reese, episcopal men s team won high school national championship title.

when university of florida s long-time head coach, bill harlan, retired in 1976, florida athletic director ray graves named reese new head coach of both gators men s , women s swimming , diving teams. on following fourteen seasons, reese s gators men s team posted dual meet record of 100–21 (.826), , gators women s team compiled record of 118–7 (.944), both among best in ncaa swimming history. gators men s , women s teams each won 2 national university championship team titles; women in 1979 , 1982, , men in 1983 , 1984. women swimmers won seventy-six aiaw , ncaa individual titles. seventy-nine of gators women garnered more 500 all-american honors , sixty of gators men earned more 200 all-american honors. ncaa women s coach of year in 1982 , 1988, , ncaa men s coach of year in 1984 , 1985. reese earned total of ten sec coach of year awards—seven men s team in 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 , 1990 , 3 women s team in 1987, 1988 , 1990.
