day 1, 13 september

the first battle fought @ naldurg fort on solapur secundarabad highway between defending force of 1st hyderabad infantry , attacking force of 7th brigade. using speed , surprise, 7th brigade managed secure vital bridge on bori river intact, following assault made on hyderabadi positions @ naldurg 2nd sikh infantry. bridge , road secured, armoured column of 1st armoured brigade – part of smash force – moved town of jalkot, 8 km naldurg, @ 0900 hours, paving way strike force units under lt. col ram singh commandant of 9 dogra (a motorised battalion) pass through. armoured column reached town of umarge, 61 km inside hyderabad 1515 hours, overpowered resistance razakar units defending town. meanwhile, column consisting of squadron of 3rd cavalry, troop 18th king edward s own cavalry, troop 9 para field regiment, 10 field company engineers, 3/2 punjab regiment, 2/1 gurkha rifles, 1 mewar infantry, , ancillary units attacked town of tuljapur, 34 km north-west of naldurg. reached tuljapur @ dawn, encountered resistance unit of 1st hyderabad infantry , 200 razakars fought 2 hours before surrendering. further advance towards town of lohara stalled river had swollen. first day on western front ended indians inflicting heavy casualties on hyderabadis , capturing large tracts of territory. amongst captured defenders british mercenary had been tasked blowing bridge near naldurg.


in east, forces led lt. gen a.a. rudra met fierce resistance 2 armoured car cavalry units of hyderabad state forces. equipped humber armoured cars , staghounds, namely 2nd , 4th hyderabad lancers, managed reach town of kodar 0830 hours. pressing on, force reached mungala afternoon.


there further incidents in hospet – 1st mysore assaulted , secured sugar factory units of razakars , pathans – , @ tungabhadra – 5/5 gurkha attacked , secured vital bridge hyderabadi army.


day 2, 14 september

the force had camped @ umarge proceeded town of rajasur, 48 km east. aerial reconnaissance had shown entrenched ambush positions set along way, air strikes squadrons of tempests called in. these air strikes cleared route , allowed land forces reach , secure rajasur afternoon.


the assault force east meanwhile slowed down anti-tank ditch , later came under heavy fire hillside positions of 1st lancers , 5th infantry 6 km suryapet. positions assaulted 2/5 gurkha – veterans of burma campaign – , neutralised hyderabadis taking severe casualties.


at same time, 3/11 gurkha rifles , squadron of 8th cavalry attacked osmanabad , took town after heavy street combat razakars determinedly resisted indians.


a force under command of maj. gen. d.s. brar tasked capturing city of aurangabad. city attacked 6 columns of infantry , cavalry, resulting in civil administration emerging in afternoon , offering surrender indians.


there further incidents in jalna 3 sikh, company of 2 jodhpur infantry , tanks 18 cavalry faced stubborn resistance hyderabadi forces.


day 3, 15 september

leaving company of 3/11 gurkhas occupy town of jalna, remainder of force moved latur, , later mominabad faced action against 3 golconda lancers gave token resistance before surrendering.


at town of surriapet, air strikes cleared of hyderabadi defences, although razakar units still gave resistance 2/5 gurkhas occupied town. retreating hyderabadi forces destroyed bridge @ musi delay indians failed offer covering fire, allowing bridge repaired. incident occurred @ narkatpalli razakar unit decimated indians.


day 4, 16 september

the task force under lt. col. ram singh moved towards zahirabad @ dawn, slowed down minefield, had cleared. on reaching junction of bidar road solapur-hyderabad city highway, forces encountered gunfire ambush positions. however, leaving of units handle ambush, bulk of force moved on reach 15 kilometres beyond zahirabad nightfall in spite of sporadic resistance along way. of resistance razakar units ambushed indians passed through urban areas. razakars able use terrain advantage until indians brought in 75 mm guns.


day 5, 17 september

in hours of 17 september, indian army entered bidar. meanwhile, forces led 1st armoured regiment @ town of chityal 60 km hyderabad, while column took on town of hingoli. morning of 5th day of hostilities, had become clear hyderabad army , razakars had been routed on fronts , extremely heavy casualties. @ 5 pm on 17 september nizam announced ceasefire ending armed action.
