psychometric properties

psychometric properties examined in representative german general population sample (sample size n = 2510, age > 13 years, year 2012).


reliability

internal consistency demonstrated cronbach s α = 0.81.


validity
content validity

the content validity supposed high because items derived well-validated phq-15. in addition, zijlema et al. (2013) reviewed 99 scientific publications presented 40 instruments designed assess somatic symptoms, somatization, or medically unexplained symptoms. conclude valid measure of somatic symptom burden should include items cardiopulmonary (including autonomic symptoms), gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, , general symptoms. sss-8 includes items 4 domains.


construct validity

the sss-8 showed positive associations measures of depression , anxiety. consistent previous studies demonstrated high co-morbidity of somatic, depressive, , anxious symptoms (i.e. somatization-anxiety-depression triad). moreover, high sss-8 scores associated poor self-reported general well-being , frequent health care use.


factorial validity

the sss-8 has higher order general factor structure. consists of general factor , 4 lower order facets (gastrointestinal symptoms, pain, cardiopulmonary symptoms, , fatigue). factor structure invariant age , gender.


objectivity

the instrument straightforward complete, has easy scoring algorithm (addition of responses), , has 2 simple interpretation methods (i.e. severity categories , gender , age specific percentiles). given this, objectivity of instrument supposed high.


sensitivity change

in sample of patients mental disorders received evidence based treatment, gierk et al. 2017 showed sss-8 sensitive change. decrease of 3 points reflected minimal clinically important difference.
