a public works administration loan , bonds funded construction of facility, completed in 1939. architects r. c. hugenin of butte , norman dekay of helena designed distinctive building amidst criticism on unusual mixing of styles. rusticated red-brown brick , horizontal division between first , second floors elements of renaissance revival style seen in earlier campus buildings. central projecting pavilion, however, reminiscent of beaux arts classicism, interrupts façade vertical focus. though animal laboratory (1951) , skywalk (1981) have been added building, façade retains original appearance.

architects designing campus buildings between 1935 , 1939 faced dilemma. should choose renaissance revival style of previous campus buildings or opt modern designs prevailing throughout nation? in compromise, 3 of 5 buildings constructed during phase allude previous style, student union , building proudly illustrate modern art deco architectural movement. simple in design, building features flat roof, windows framed in terra cotta, , stepped parapet. completed in 1937, building financed woman’s club of missoula , pwa. served clubhouse , art building housing first art museum in inland northwest. later occupied alumni association, building accommodates continuing education , woman’s club of missoula.

the first building added campus after 1908 facility, housed modern equipment branches of life science research, including stereopticon , motion picture apparatus. begun in 1917 , completed in 1919, first of 8 campus buildings designed according new carsley-gilbert master plan, inspired ordered expansion of university. architects mciver, cohagen, , marshall of billings chose renaissance revival style setting standard remaining carsley-gilbert plan buildings added between 1922 , 1927. in 1977, facility renamed botany building in honor of sole remaining occupant.

this 1938 addition renaissance revival style botany building (formerly natural science) offers excellent example of importance of public works administration funds during depression era expansion of university of montana. u-shaped annex of brick , glass contained equipped botanical laboratory, experimental animal rooms, , greenhouse. equipped solely use botany department, annex, red-brown exterior , hipped roof, designed architecturally compatible older building.

helena architect george carsley , new york architect cass gilbert designed campus master plan implemented between 1918 , 1927. although carsley continued consultant on other buildings erected under plan, 1922 gymnasium university building designed exclusively. 1 of group deviating renaissance revival style gilbert , carsley specified. strong vertical emphasis, blocky massing, , stylized decoration characterize expression of art deco style, while materials used in construction visually conform other carsley-gilbert campus buildings. renamed schreiber gym, facility houses rotc.

professor frederick scheuch , first university president oscar craig created original campus master plan in 1895. plan specified entrances of immediate , future campus buildings face center of large oval. ovals formal element commonly used in landscape design of late 19th century, on academic campuses. although main hall , science hall (razed in 1984) placed according craig-scheuch plan, beautifully landscaped oval, surrounded eclectic collection of buildings, remains focal point of campus.

prominent state legislator , county commissioner clarence r. prescott homesteaded here in 1891, planting vast orchard of plum, cherry, pear, , apple trees. in 1898, prescott replaced original log dwelling beautiful queen anne style residence. home patterned after childhood home of prescott’s wife julia, schoolteacher, had come montana pennsylvania in 1880. today prescott homestead 1 of few remaining links agricultural foundations of missoula. property owned family until 1955 when university of montana purchased prescott acreage. son clarence prescott, jr., granted life tenancy of house , 1-acre (4,000 m).
