chadian rebels reported have entered n djamena around 07:00 on saturday february 2, 2008, coming massaguet. rebels split 2 columns. 1 halted 3 km presidential palace, government tanks fired @ it. other took control of eastern parts of city, , swung towards presidential palace, halted tank fire. eyewitnesses reported seeing rebel activity in south , east of n djamena, fighting later spreading area around presidential palace. smoke rose city, shook artillery. 1 resident of western embassy told reuters: rebels headed palace , 2 blocks here. rebels winning . residence of saudi ambassador hit bomb during fighting, led death of wife , daughter of 1 of embassy staff. rebels in 15 vehicles drove past libya hotel, overlooks parliament building, few hours after start of battle. fighting reported have died down 12:45 pm, state radio station going off air around same time.


later military source confirmed rebels had taken control of outlying neighborhoods of capital , part of city center after intense fighting government forces. rebel command reported had presidential palace surrounded, president inside, , planning attack palace later in evening. government troops surrounding presidential palace , using heavy weapons against rebels.


just before dusk government troops made attempt push rebels in east of city , take territory in city center. however, gains made military reported small. fighting during day intense, , @ 1 point french soldiers got involved when exchanged fire unknown gunmen while protecting 1 of hotels house hundreds of foreign nationals. 2 french soldiers injured. in parts of city rebels greeted cheering civilians.


on same day, jana, libya s official news agency, reported libya s leader muammar gaddafi had persuaded nouri end fighting. denied rebel spokesman.
